How to Reapply Sunscreen even Over Make-Up
I often encounter questions about how to logistically reapply sunscreen every two hours, particularly on a regular day over make-up. While many people understand the importance of reapplying sunscreen they lack the knowledge of how to actually make it happen. So, let's delve into the ins and outs of how to properly reapply that sunscreen.
Whether you're actively in the sun (outside for an extended period of time at the pool or beach) or going about your daily business start with a sunscreen moisturizer every morning in a cream or lotion vehicle and then choose one of the following types of SPF products to reapply: : stick, spray, make-up like compact mist, or a cream or lotion sunscreen. You can even simply use the same product you used in the morning– this has been my preferred method. Don’t forget your lips!
What if you’re wearing make-up?
- Sticks: I especially like sticks for reapply children and this is a must for golfers in my opinion!
- Sprays: Make sure to spray spf sprays in your hand and then apply by patting into your skin to ensure proper coverage. If you’re going to take the time to apply and reapply make sure it’s worth it!
The easiest way to reapply on the face is simply with the same cream or lotion you used in the morning. This is my preference especially on days I’m not wearing make-up.
So How Do You Reapply SPF Over Make-Up?
For convenience of reapplying on the face, consider using sunscreen mists or spray. I’m not talking about the sunscreen sprays you see on the sunscreen aisle. If you have any powder or blush on I’ve found make-up setting sprays with sunscreen are honestly the best. There aren’t many of them with at least SPF 30, and even more rare are ones that are 100% mineral. Check out some of the ones I use on repeat below.
The only product I do have a strong opinion about is not using powder SPF brushes because it’s so hard to ensure coverage. With the sprays above it is best to apply in your hand and then press into the skin on your face.
And don't let those cloudy or overcast days fool you into skipping your sunscreen reapplication. UV rays are powerful enough to penetrate through clouds and will still cause skin damage.
Why Reapply?
First and foremost, it's essential to understand why reapplication is necessary so that we are motivated to be compliant with the every 2 hour reapplication rule. Sunscreen's efficacy diminishes over time due to factors such as sweating, swimming, or simply wearing it off through regular activities. To maintain its protective benefits, sunscreen needs to be reapplied regularly, especially during prolonged sun exposure.
So, how often should you reapply sunscreen? A general rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. However, if you're engaging in activities that cause heavy perspiration or friction against the skin, such as playing sports or gardening, you may need to reapply more frequently.
Sunscreen Reapplication Techniques
Now, let's talk technique for reapplying on the entire body. When it's time to reapply sunscreen, here’s what to do:
- Start by gently blotting or wiping away any excess sweat or oil from your skin
- Generously apply a fresh layer of sunscreen to all exposed areas, convering every inch of skin thoroughly
- Don't forget commonly missed areas like the ears, neck, tops of feet, and even your scalp
Remember, it's better to apply too much sunscreen than too little, so don't be shy about slathering it on!
What Type of Sunscreen is Best?
An essential factor to consider is the type of sunscreen you're using. If you're using a chemical sunscreen, it's best to wait about 15-30 minutes after application before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully absorb into the skin. On the other hand, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide provide immediate protection upon application and can be reapplied as needed without waiting.
