What you don't know about retinoids
Flashback to 2017- a major shift in drugstore skincare happened. Differin Gel (adapalene 0.1%), the weakest form of prescription retinoic acid, became available in drugstores.
This is HUGE because Differin (adapalene 0.1%) is a prescription- grade retinoid; the first-line treatment for acne, brown discoloration, and fine lines.
For me, as a dermatology PA, this was a gamechanger for my patients whose insurance wouldn’t cover topical acne medicines and were constantly prescribed antibiotic pills. They now had access to an affordable solution.

Retinoids are a workout for your skin, so as your skin health improves, you can typically increase your retinoid usage to a prescription-grade retinoid, but stronger isn’t always better. Consistent use is the key!
PRO TIP: Everyone can start with retinaldehyde, which has to be converted once in the skin to Differin gel. There’s so much to say! Don’t forget as a licensed PA I have plenty of other tips for adding retinoids to your routine.
