Review: 4 Mineral “safe” sunscreens I’m trying
When it comes to choosing sunscreen, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by flashy labels and buzzwords. But here’s the truth: the two most important things to look for are the SPF number and the ingredients listed in the rectangular “Drug Facts” box on the back.
If you're worried about safety (like many of my clients are), good news: mineral sunscreens are your best bet. These formulas contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—the only two ingredients you need to scan for. They physically block UV rays instead of absorbing into your bloodstream, which is why they’re considered safer for long-term use, especially when it comes to hormone and reproductive health. Bonus? They also provide the most comprehensive protection, which is why they’re often labeled as “broad-spectrum.”Let’s break down exactly what to look for—and what to avoid—so you can feel confident in your sunscreen choice.
The 4 following sunscreens are all:
- 100% mineral sunscreens (contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and do not also have any chemical sunscreen filters)
- at least SPF30
Some of these do contain fragrance, and you’ll see that reflected in my review and the EWG rating. Most sunscreens with concerning scores stem from the main ingredients being chemical (instead of mineral) SPF filters.
The following are all wonderful options to try as your daily face (including eyelids), neck, chest and hand sunscreen!
The Outset Hydrasheer 100% Mineral SPF 30

Review: Hydrating, soothing, and protecting. It feels more like skincare than sun care—it’s lightweight, non-greasy, and layers beautifully under makeup. With zinc oxide as the active ingredient, it offers broad-spectrum protection without the typical white cast, making it a great choice for sensitive or reactive skin types.

Review: The texture and the fact that it’s 100% mineral is impressive. It has a light botanical fragrance that I not Jack mind! While the sheer tint helps immediately blur uneven skin tone and minimize redness, Ectoin works behind the scenes to protect and even tone over time by defending against the root causes of discoloration and damage.
