What is the double cleanse method?

If you’re still using make-up wipes this is your sign to STOP.

Real talk, if I were you I would only use them as disposable washcloths from now on or for make-up touch up. Maybe even for the occasional lazy night that we all have— but still try to add a water or some sort of cleanser, micellar water, or make-up remover between them and your skin!

Why? You might ask…

Because make-up wipes can lead to more breakouts because they don’t cleanse the skin well... more like spread the dirt around. Plus most are harsh on the skin since they don’t have sufficient solution.

Allow me to introduce you to the double cleanse method...

What is the double cleanse method and how to do it:

It’s a two-step cleansing process from Korean skincare.

Step 1 - Start by picking an oil cleanser (there are so. many. options. and textures). Pond’s Cold Cream is my drugstore favorite and still the best to remove eye make-up of any oil cleanser.

Massage into eye area and skin with fingers then rinse with water. This means you don't have to ruin washcloths or remember to always pack a cotton pad.

Step 2 - Follow up with a regular cleanser.

Pro Tip- I recommend rinsing the regular cleanser with a washcloth to truly remove all make-up and add gentle exfoliation.

Double cleanse FAQs

  • Is micellar water an oil cleanser? No.
  • Do make-up remover wipes work? NOOO
  • Are make-up eraser cloths an oil cleanser? No.
  • Is an oil cleanser good for oily skin? YES, oil dissolve oil
  • Should you double cleanse when you aren’t wearing make-up? Technically yes. However, if I’m being transparent I don’t always. I'll use my oil cleanser only and not follow with a regular cleanser.

All make-up removers aren’t oil cleansers, but all oil cleansers are make-up removers.

Any product that turns to oil from our body heat when placed on our skin is an oil cleanser.
Rub a product between your fingers if you’re unsure. Oil cleansers come in many forms; oils, cream, balms, etc…

Why everyone should oil cleanse

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, should be oil cleansing. Ladies, this is basically the make-up remover step BUT SO MUCH MORE.

This should be the first step of your PM routine because the SECRET to healthy skin is a healthy skin barrier. Oil cleansing fortifies and replenishes the skin barrier for both dry AND breakout-prone skin. Not to mention, I promise it’s the EASIEST way to remove make-up.

The science behind it:

OIL dissolves OIL + replenishes the skin barrier = the secret to healthy skin

THE BENEFITS:

  • Great for oily skin (oil dissolves oil)
  • Oil is wonderful for dry skin
  • Supports the protective barrier
  • Allows you to use stronger products to improve the skin
  • Helps skin thrive through winter
  • moisturizes the skin without being a thick, goopy moisturizer

Think of it as a way to moisturize without putting thicker moisturizer on. This is a dream for oil skin because the oil cleanser is rinsed off! I’m oily, breakout-prone, and it took me years to understand and believe this concept.

So, you see, no matter your skin type you can benefit. Good news! If you’re searching for an oil cleanser there are SO MANY TYPES to choose from!

Pro Tip:

The best way to take off your make-up is by using an oil cleanser, water, and your hands.

Ok, Ok, if you MUST use a make-up wipe on the go– this is the one I recommend: Pond’s Micellar Wipes.

Also I’ll let you in on a secret of a lazy PM routine. It’s 2 steps and involves no water. Use an oil cleanser, rinse with a cotton pad (or make-up wipe), then apply your PM treatment step– either a retinoid or retinoid alternative like azelaic acid.
